An Explanation

My facebook has been flooded with status updates about The Bachelor. Will someone please, please, PLEASE explain to me why anyone watches this show? Why do former/present Young Womens' leaders watch this show? Why do mothers and daughters have special parties to watch this show? Is the premise not a bunch of women falling all over one man, routinely making out and doing degrading 'challenges'? Why didn't one of them catch swine flu and pass it on to everyone else through the bachelor..? Ok, maybe thats just spiteful.
I have a feeling if this show was based in some Middle Eastern local with women in veils, everyone would be crying how awful it is, but because the women are "independent" and can dress and act as brazenly as they like, its suddenly ok?
But really, if someone has a legitimate reason why you or anyone else you know watches it, or thinks it is somehow ok to promote, could you please enlighten me? Because for now, with the information I have, I'm pretty disgusted. Thanks.

I absolutely agree with you! I don't understand the appeal. I lump it in with Grey's Anatomy and Desperate HouseWhores but maybe I'm wrong. Totally idealizing girls getting plastic surgery and needing to dress skanky with their boobs popping out to have worth. I know some people think it is hilarious and watch to make fun, but I personally have no desire to watch.

I have to say, yes, I agree with you...to a certain extent. I hate the majority of the "reality" TV shows out there as well as a few that Stephanie mentioned in the previous comment. In no way do I think they are appropriate or even remotely entertaining.

But I think you're kidding yourself if you think Middle Eastern cultures are "saintly" or that they would turn the other cheek at these shows, because honestly the TV programs in some other countries could make ours look like "Leave it to Beaver".

So, yeah, just don't watch, don't support and do your best to be a good example to others. That's really all you can do. And try to teach our children what the right things are to allow into homes & lives.

Stephanie-YES!
D- Right, I see what you're saying. I didn't really take time to flesh out my little comparison. I meant to imply more that we look at cultures like middle eastern ones as horrible tyrants of woman and womanhood, which don't get me wrong, in many/most ways they definitely are, and sit back and point our fingers at their obvious abuses of womanhood while using the other to change the channel to shows like The Bachelor. I guess what I'm trying to say is we have a complacency among women in the U.S. about our situation and have been lulled by some idea of independence into a world where our entertainment rather than our laws (for the most part) separate and degrade us-and we promote and watch it because its 'only a show' etc...

Well I'm glad to see you both agree with me but now I need someone to tell me why they think its ok! I'll never understand...

This is really funny. I just had this same thought a couple of days ago when I was on Face book. I guess everyone has different standards, even those in the church.

Okay, first of all, watching "The Bachelor" is not a sin, oh my goodness! Second of all, this is all a matter of opinion. This is what I do...I watch the first episode to see all the silly girls. I think it's hilarious. Then I skip the episodes in the middle because, like you, I don't like to watch other people make out with each other. Then I watch the last episode to see if I guessed right as to who he chose (which I was totally off this time). I of course watch it online so I can skip the kissing parts and the corny parts in the last episode(yes it disgusts me too). However, I know lots of women who watch "The Bachelor" faithfully and I do not judge them as sinners. I personally don't like to watch the drama in the middle, but some enjoy it.

P.S. I'm not saying YOU are judging others...I've just come across some who do...
